High School Football Picks-Week 6

Coming into week 6, I've got a record of 100-26, after going 22-2 last week. South surprised University (and me) and Lake Catholic fell short against Walsh Jesuit. Those game prevented me from having a perfect week. In spotlight games, I'm now at 18-2.

LAKE COUNTY GAME OF THE WEEK-Brunswick (5-0) at Mentor (5-0). Battle of the unbeatens at Osborne Stadium, and a rematch of the 2007 Division 1 State Semifinal. Blue Devils are a little bit of surprising 5-0, but they do have a strong tradition out there in Medina County. The Cardinals' march to a potential 10-0 season continues, with the running of Nick Kovach an added offensive element to the already existing 'air raid' attack. The much-maligned defense had no trouble last week against Parma. Someone will no longer be undefeated after this Friday, and I have a pretty good idea who that will be. Pick: Mentor

ASHTABULA COUNTY GAME OF THE WEEK: Pymatuning Valley (4-1) at Grand Valley (2-3). Big rivalry with lots of meaning this year. Both teams hope to challenge Ledgemont for the NAC title. Both also have D4 playoff hopes, although the Lakers have more hope at the moment. PV has dominated in the games it has won, but lost to the only good team it has played. Grand Valley had to play without five suspended starters for 2 of their 3 losses. Emotions will be high, and both teams have talent, making this a tough call.
Pick: Grand Valley, in a season-making upset.

GEAUGA COUNTY GAME OF THE WEEK: Aurora (4-1) at West Geauga (5-0). Titanic CVC Chagrin clash in Chesterland. Greenmen fell to Chagrin Falls in overtime in Week 4, but have cruised in their other games. This team was the pre-season favorite to win the CVC Chagrin. West Geauga was unhappy with its performance in an 18-10 win over Perry, after rolling through 3 PAC teams and Harvey. I'm not too sure about what the keys to winning this game will be other than the usual-control the line of scrimmage, don't turn the ball over, and play strong defense. Should be a great game, and is one of the week's toughest calls.
Pick: Aurora

EASTERN CUYAHOGA COUNTY GAME OF THE WEEK: Lake Catholic (4-1) at Benedictine (5-0).
The rivalry is back. The Cougars have won three straight in dominating fashion, but this is a new and improved Bengals squad. Lake Catholic has faced a tougher schedule overall, but Benedictine has quality wins of its own. The Cougars showed some susceptibility to the pass in the last couple of games, and Benedictine has a new-found propensity to throw the ball down the field. The Bengals, on the other hand, have also had a tendency to start slow in games. That could doom them against the Cougars. This may be the best game of the night. Pick: Lake Catholic

The rest of the schedule:

FRIDAY NIGHT:

Independence over Fairport-Though improved, Skippers not quite there yet.
Perry over Harvey-Pirates will take out frustrations on hapless Red Raiders
Kirtland over Berkshire-CVC Valley domination continues for Hornets.
Madison over North-If Morris can't play Rangers could be in trouble against powerful Blue Streaks
Riverside over Geneva-Beginning of what could be a strong second-half push for Beavers.
South over Chardon-Rebels may be on the rise, Hilltoppers need to control the ball.
Chagrin Falls over Wickliffe-Back to reality for the Blue Devils. 12-game losing streak to Tigers will grow.
Jefferson over Conneaut-Spartans only have one TD this year; no problem for Falcons.
Campbell Memorial over Edgewood-Young Warriors have another tough task this week.
Cuyahoga Hts. over Cardinal-Redskins should rebound against team that has D4 status this year.
Hawken over Richmond Hts.-This could get ugly-Spartans' game last week certainly was.
Kenston over Orange-Both teams trying to rebound from CVC Chagrin beatings last week.
Ledgemont over Vienna Mathews-Another week, another big win for No.1 team in the state in D6.
Beachwood over Newbury-Black Knights overmatched against D4 Bison.
NDCL over Padua-Whether on grass or the turf (of Perry), Lions look like better team this year.
Mayfield over Brush-Disappointing seasons for both this year, but stronger defense of Wildcats wins out.
Euclid over Shaw-Panthers finally get to play a team that's not undefeated.

SATURDAY AFTERNOON:

University over Lakeside-Preppers should win going away. Dragons not ready for prime time (or matinee).
Trinity over Gilmour-Someone will pick up their first win; Trojans played Warren JFK tough last week.
Central Catholic over VASJ-Another difficult pick; basketball rivalry translating to football.

High School Football-Week 5 in Review

A look at back at games I attended over the weekend.:

FRIDAY NIGHT: Harvey at Wickliffe. One of the more even matchups of the weekend. These are the bottom tier teams of the CVC Chagrin, or at least have been over the last few seasons. The pouring rain and thick mud definitely helped the Blue Devils against the swift Red Raiders. Still, Wickliffe might have won anyway. They've got a senior group that's been playing quite a bit over the last 3 years. For Harvey, a tough season continues. Defense and offensive line will have to step up in a big way for the Red Raiders to have any chance in their final five games. Coffee-to-Ward is a good connection, but Harvey will need more than that.

SATURDAY NIGHT: Walsh Jesuit at Lake Catholic. The easy thing to do would be to point to the fake field goal attempt and the two failed conversions and blame those for the 14-12 Cougars loss. I would say there were a couple of other things that contributed. One, the Warriors were able to pick up clutch first downs in the second half even though Lake Catholic's defense played well once again. Two, the Cougars had some confusion on some offensive plays that put the team in a hole. Two big games in a row loom for Lake Catholic-Benedictine this week and NDCL the following week.

Week 5 High School Football Picks

Entering Week 5, I've got a record of 78-24, including 14-2 in spotlight games. I have a feeling there may be some upsets this week, but I'm not sure if I'm ready to go out on a limb.

LAKE COUNTY GAME OF THE WEEK: Cuyahoga Hts. (4-0) at Kirtland (4-0). Well, here we go again. Another big mid-season matchup between these two teams. A mix of old and new faces for each. As good as Cuyahoga Hts. is and has been, Kirtland seems to have edged ahead as a program. PICK: Kirtland

ASHTABULA COUNTY GAME OF THE WEEK: Geneva (2-2) at Lakeside (1-3). I understand that this is a pretty bitter rivalry out east, with taunting and things being thrown at buses and everything. This game between the two biggest schools in Ashtabula County is once again a conference game, as Geneva is now in the PAC. Unfortunately, the loser of this one likely finishes last in the league. PICK: Geneva

GEAUGA COUNTY GAME OF THE WEEK: Fairport (3-1) at Hawken (2-2). The Skippers are a great story so far this year, especially for a team that list just 2 seniors on its roster. They've got some talented juniors, but as always, numbers are and will be an issue throughout the season. The Hawks have some atoning to do after falling down hard against the two solid teams that they've played so far. PICK: Hawken

EASTERN CUYAHOGA COUNTY GAME OF THE WEEK: Columbus Hartley (4-0) at VASJ (3-1).
This Saturday afternoon the Vikings play host to the defending Division 4 State Champions who happen also to be ranked #1 in the State coming into this game. A team which is also coming off a 45-21 thrashing of NCL Blue member Akron Hoban. VASJ has tough kids, to be sure, but they also have too many two-way players and are at risk for being worn down in a game like this. Offensively, the Vikings have had trouble moving the ball at times, at other times have come up with big plays. Last year Hartley won this matchup 37-8. All signs seem to point to a big loss for VASJ this week, but stranger things have happened at Sparky DiBiasio Stadium. PICK: Columbus Hartley

The rest of the schedule:

FRIDAY NIGHT:

Wickliffe over Harvey-Even matchup but Blue Devils are overdue.
Madison over Chardon-Blue Streaks will rebound in what might be a close game.
Mentor over Parma-No contest.
North over Riverside. Upset possibilty #1. Beavers knocked off Rangers last year, and might again.
West G. over Perry-Upset possibility #2. CVC Chagrin always has at least one, but staying with WG.
University over South-Another tough call, but I've liked University all year.
Pymatuning Valley over Conneaut-Spartans might score, though.
Ledgemont over Edgewood-Can Redskins get 4th straight shutout? Yes.
Grand Valley over Gilmour-Mustangs must win out for any shot at playoffs, might already be too late.
Jefferson over Youngstown Liberty. Falcons should be able to take out an 0-4 team.
Berkshire over Richmond Hts.-Went back and forth on this one, and it could go either way.
Cardinal over Newbury-Huskies pick up first win of the year.
Chagrin Falls over Kenston-Upset possibilty #3. Tempted to take Bombers here, but CF seems focused.
NDCL over Toledo Rogers-Another team that gets to face an 0-4 out-of-town opponent.
Benedictine over Central Catholic-Bengals avenge rare loss to the Ironmen last year.
Twinsburg over Brush-Arcs run into a team that won't be happy after loss last week.
Cleveland Hts. over Euclid-Panthers will bounce back from last week's debacle, but not enough.
Mayfield over Stow-Here's an upset I can endorse. Wildcats can turn season around, starting here.
Aurora over Orange-Lions better than people think, but not better than Greenmen.

SATURDAY NIGHT:

Lake Catholic over Walsh Jesuit-Nothing stopping Cougars now. Could be Blue Division decider.

A look at Week 4 in High School Football

Some thoughts from the games I attended over the weekend:

FRIDAY NIGHT: Mentor at Mayfield. The first meeting between these two since 1992, the final season in the GCC for Mentor. The Cardinals were expected to win big, and they did, although Mayfield hung in there for a half. It's just so hard for area teams to stop Mentor when the Cardinals are able to just send receivers down the field that are able to get open consistently with a quarterback who can get them the ball consistently. It reminds me of pick-up football on the school playground. The Cardinals are rightly concerned about the run defense at this point-nobody forgets the State Championship loss to Cincinnati St. Xavier. Mayfield has lost 3 straight after a season-opening win, but as the schedule starts to get a little easier, the wins will start to come. They're not a bad team at all.

SATURDAY NIGHT: Warren JFK at VASJ. This was a big opportunity for the Vikings to get an important win over a good team, and they did it. Good football game between two pretty evenly matched teams who might meet again in the D6 playoffs in November. Both defenses played tough, and the Vikings were able to capitalize on some big special teams plays. A punt block led to a touchdown, and a field goal attempt was also blocked. VASJ didn't move the ball as well on the ground in this game, a lot of which was due to the Eagles' defense. If VASJ can get its passing game clicking consistently, it could have a great season. Even with the lack of depth. Basically the same 18 or 19 kids play offense, defense, and special teams.

Week 4 High School Football Picks

Week 4 is upon us in area high school football. My overall record in picks stands at 60-18, including 11-1 in spotlight games. This week, some teams move into conference play:

LAKE COUNTY GAME OF THE WEEK: Hawken (2-1) at Kirtland (3-0). This CVC Crossover matchup features longtime local rivals. After losing to University, the Hawks have won a couple in a row, although against easier competition. Kirtland, meanwhile, keeps rolling along, maybe to another 10-0 season.
PICK: Kirtland

ASHTABULA COUNTY GAME OF THE WEEK: South (1-2) vs. Geneva (2-1). The Rebels are off to a slow start, but things could start to pick up here. The Eagles have achieved a winning mark against fellow Ashtabula County schools thus far, but step up in class against a PAC foe. This game was a season-opening staple in the 80s and 90s. PICK: South

GEAUGA COUNTY GAME OF THE WEEK: Wickliffe (2-1) at Kenston (1-2). It's a little surprising that the Blue Devils would have the better record of these two teams coming into the game, but the Bombers have played much stronger opponents. Wickliffe has not beaten Kenston in football since the 1989 season. PICK: Kenston

EASTERN CUYAHOGA COUNTY GAME OF THE WEEK: Madison (3-0) at University (3-0). This was my preseason pick for the game of the year in the PAC. I felt that the winner of this game would be the conference champ. That may not be the case, as some other teams in the PAC have shown signs of possible contention. Still, there's a very good chance that these teams could finish 1-2, and at any rate, this should be one of the best games of the weekend. That's provided, of course, that the Preppers can match up physically, and the Blue Streaks can counter the big-play capability of University. PICK: Madison

The rest of the schedule:

FRIDAY NIGHT

Fairport over Cardinal
West Geauga over Harvey
Youngstown Mooney over Lake Catholic
Mentor over Mayfield
North over Chardon
Perry over Orange
Riverside over Lakeside
Ledgemont over Conneaut

Week 3 High School Football in Review

A look at the Week 3 games that I attended:

FRIDAY NIGHT-Midpark at North. A mismatch from the start. North has defeated Midpark 7 straight times, and considering that it's been awhile since Midpark has been relevant in football, that's hardly a surprise. That said, North has to have the players to make it look so easy, and they do. With Gresko, Morris, and Josipovic, they've got a triple threat that can put the ball in the end zone against most teams. All the real tests for the Rangers are in front of them-and that starts with a rejeuvenated Chardon team this Friday. The Hilltoppers may be 1-2, but the losses have come to undefeated West Geauga and Maple Hts., and Chardon had leads in both games.

SATURDAY NIGHT-Youngstown Ursuline at Lake Catholic. Defense, defense, defense. The Cougars played great defense, reminiscent of great Lake Catholic defenses of the past. The 2011 Cougars look to be a team that will grind it out on offense and shut teams down on defense. That's classic, old-school style Lake Catholic football. Great game, and a great win for the Cougars. Next up will be another huge challenge in a season full of them-Friday night vs. Youngstown Mooney at Youngstown State University. Lake Catholic is 0-6 in their last six meetings with the Cardinals, and in fact haven't beaten them since the 1992 Division III State Playoffs. What's more, the Cougars are 2-10 all-time against Mooney.

Week 3 High School Football

Into Week 3 now, my record is 37-13, including 7-1 in Spotlight Games (Geneva let me down last week). This week's picks:

LAKE COUNTY GAME OF THE WEEK: St.Ignatius (2-0) at Mentor (2-0). The Wildcats will try to run all over the Cardinals, and the Cardinals will try to pass over the Wildcats. So what will happen? It could go either way, but it's tough to beat Mentor at Osborne Stadium. PICK: Mentor

ASHTABULA COUNTY GAME OF THE WEEK: Lakeside (0-2) vs. Edgewood (1-1). Big rivalry in Ashtabula. Last year Edgewood won 25-0. This year I think that the Dragons return the favor, and pick up their first win since 2009. PICK: Lakeside

GEAUGA COUNTY GAME OF THE WEEK: Maple Hts. (2-0) at Chardon (1-1). Is Chardon football back? A split against their two big Geauga County rivals is a step in the right direction, but I don't think they're ready to beat the defending Division II state champs. PICK: Maple Hts.

EASTERN CUYAHOGA COUNTY GAME OF THE WEEK: Kirtland (2-0) at Orange (2-0). The Hornets take on another D3 school in Orange. Although I can see a pretty close game here, as the Lions are a little better than the teams Kirtland has played thus far, Hornets will stay unbeaten. PICK: Kirtland

The rest of the schedule:

H.S. Football Week 2 in review

Some impressions from Week 2 games that I attended:

FRIDAY NIGHT: Kirtland at Harvey-As I expected, Kirtland handled Harvey pretty easily, 49-7. The Hornets were strong in all areas-offense, defense, and special teams. They may finish 10-0 once again. Damon Washington's speed and athleticism just makes them that much stronger. Harvey, despite the size they have along the lines, struggle against good teams. The Red Raiders will need to develop some offensive weapons other than Kaleb Coffee, and continue to try to get better on defense. It's going to take a huge effort to beat Riverside and end the jinx this week, even though the Beavers are 0-2.

SATURDAY NIGHT: University at VASJ. I thought this might be a better game, but University won easily, 42-0. The Preppers are a very good team that I expect to win many games this year. Tyler Eden and John McKelvey are going to be a tough duo to stop, and Kevin Smith is a good back, also. VASJ is clearly focusing the offense around Devon Bolden and Tim Harrison. The passing game did not look good at all. The defense was manned with many of the same players from the offensive side of the ball, as low numbers are going to hurt the Vikings all year. On the plus side, the Vikings may not play a better team than University all year. They definitely won't play a bigger team.

High School Football Picks-Week 2

Week 2 is here. My record coming in stands at 20-6. This week's picks:

LAKE COUNTY GAME OF THE WEEK-Kirtland (1-0) at Harvey (1-0).  On paper, some could see Harvey as the favorite here. Chagrin Divison vs. Valley Division, D2 vs. D5, more experienced and more athletic quarterback. Realistically, the Hornets should have almost no problem here, even as the visitor.
PICK: Kirtland

ASHTABULA COUNTY GAME OF THE WEEK: Jefferson (0-1) at Geneva (1-0). This has been a pretty spirited rivalry over the years, and Jefferson scored a nice 21-20 upset last year. Geneva was much more impressive in Week 1, though, and can't afford to lose any of their early games before entering PAC play. PICK: Geneva

GEAUGA COUNTY GAME OF THE WEEK: Kenston (0-1) at Chardon (0-1). This is the same scenario as the meeting here two years ago, with both teams coming off rough opening-night losses. That year Kenston stepped forward and won 37-19. This time, I'm going out on a limb and giving the nod to Mitch Hewitt's crew. PICK: Chardon

EASTERN CUYAHOGA COUNTY GAME OF THE WEEK: NDCL (1-0) at Chagrin Falls (1-0). Surprising Lions head into Chagrin Falls with a full head of steam after last week's stunning win over South. Experienced Tigers won't back down, though. PICK: Chagrin Falls
