Coming into week 6, I've got a record of 100-26, after going 22-2 last week. South surprised University (and me) and Lake Catholic fell short against Walsh Jesuit. Those game prevented me from having a perfect week. In spotlight games, I'm now at 18-2.
LAKE COUNTY GAME OF THE WEEK-Brunswick (5-0) at Mentor (5-0). Battle of the unbeatens at Osborne Stadium, and a rematch of the 2007 Division 1 State Semifinal. Blue Devils are a little bit of surprising 5-0, but they do have a strong tradition out there in Medina County. The Cardinals' march to a potential 10-0 season continues, with the running of Nick Kovach an added offensive element to the already existing 'air raid' attack. The much-maligned defense had no trouble last week against Parma. Someone will no longer be undefeated after this Friday, and I have a pretty good idea who that will be. Pick: Mentor
ASHTABULA COUNTY GAME OF THE WEEK: Pymatuning Valley (4-1) at Grand Valley (2-3). Big rivalry with lots of meaning this year. Both teams hope to challenge Ledgemont for the NAC title. Both also have D4 playoff hopes, although the Lakers have more hope at the moment. PV has dominated in the games it has won, but lost to the only good team it has played. Grand Valley had to play without five suspended starters for 2 of their 3 losses. Emotions will be high, and both teams have talent, making this a tough call.
Pick: Grand Valley, in a season-making upset.
GEAUGA COUNTY GAME OF THE WEEK: Aurora (4-1) at West Geauga (5-0). Titanic CVC Chagrin clash in Chesterland. Greenmen fell to Chagrin Falls in overtime in Week 4, but have cruised in their other games. This team was the pre-season favorite to win the CVC Chagrin. West Geauga was unhappy with its performance in an 18-10 win over Perry, after rolling through 3 PAC teams and Harvey. I'm not too sure about what the keys to winning this game will be other than the usual-control the line of scrimmage, don't turn the ball over, and play strong defense. Should be a great game, and is one of the week's toughest calls.
Pick: Aurora
EASTERN CUYAHOGA COUNTY GAME OF THE WEEK: Lake Catholic (4-1) at Benedictine (5-0).
The rivalry is back. The Cougars have won three straight in dominating fashion, but this is a new and improved Bengals squad. Lake Catholic has faced a tougher schedule overall, but Benedictine has quality wins of its own. The Cougars showed some susceptibility to the pass in the last couple of games, and Benedictine has a new-found propensity to throw the ball down the field. The Bengals, on the other hand, have also had a tendency to start slow in games. That could doom them against the Cougars. This may be the best game of the night. Pick: Lake Catholic
The rest of the schedule:
FRIDAY NIGHT:
Independence over Fairport-Though improved, Skippers not quite there yet.
Perry over Harvey-Pirates will take out frustrations on hapless Red Raiders
Kirtland over Berkshire-CVC Valley domination continues for Hornets.
Madison over North-If Morris can't play Rangers could be in trouble against powerful Blue Streaks
Riverside over Geneva-Beginning of what could be a strong second-half push for Beavers.
South over Chardon-Rebels may be on the rise, Hilltoppers need to control the ball.
Chagrin Falls over Wickliffe-Back to reality for the Blue Devils. 12-game losing streak to Tigers will grow.
Jefferson over Conneaut-Spartans only have one TD this year; no problem for Falcons.
Campbell Memorial over Edgewood-Young Warriors have another tough task this week.
Cuyahoga Hts. over Cardinal-Redskins should rebound against team that has D4 status this year.
Hawken over Richmond Hts.-This could get ugly-Spartans' game last week certainly was.
Kenston over Orange-Both teams trying to rebound from CVC Chagrin beatings last week.
Ledgemont over Vienna Mathews-Another week, another big win for No.1 team in the state in D6.
Beachwood over Newbury-Black Knights overmatched against D4 Bison.
NDCL over Padua-Whether on grass or the turf (of Perry), Lions look like better team this year.
Mayfield over Brush-Disappointing seasons for both this year, but stronger defense of Wildcats wins out.
Euclid over Shaw-Panthers finally get to play a team that's not undefeated.
SATURDAY AFTERNOON:
University over Lakeside-Preppers should win going away. Dragons not ready for prime time (or matinee).
Trinity over Gilmour-Someone will pick up their first win; Trojans played Warren JFK tough last week.
Central Catholic over VASJ-Another difficult pick; basketball rivalry translating to football.
