Some impressions from Week 2 games that I attended:
FRIDAY NIGHT: Kirtland at Harvey-As I expected, Kirtland handled Harvey pretty easily, 49-7. The Hornets were strong in all areas-offense, defense, and special teams. They may finish 10-0 once again. Damon Washington's speed and athleticism just makes them that much stronger. Harvey, despite the size they have along the lines, struggle against good teams. The Red Raiders will need to develop some offensive weapons other than Kaleb Coffee, and continue to try to get better on defense. It's going to take a huge effort to beat Riverside and end the jinx this week, even though the Beavers are 0-2.
SATURDAY NIGHT: University at VASJ. I thought this might be a better game, but University won easily, 42-0. The Preppers are a very good team that I expect to win many games this year. Tyler Eden and John McKelvey are going to be a tough duo to stop, and Kevin Smith is a good back, also. VASJ is clearly focusing the offense around Devon Bolden and Tim Harrison. The passing game did not look good at all. The defense was manned with many of the same players from the offensive side of the ball, as low numbers are going to hurt the Vikings all year. On the plus side, the Vikings may not play a better team than University all year. They definitely won't play a bigger team.
